Hiroyuki Oya worked at the Saitama bureau of the Sankei Shimbun, covering crime and administration. He also worked in the Local News Section of its Tokyo head bureau, where he oversaw coverage of the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. He became a reporter for Diamond in 2012, covering areas such as precision equipment, semiconductors, retail and distribution, and IT. He is currently in charge of the IT and telecommunications industry coverage. He became the deputy editor-in-chief in 2019. His major stories include "AI Hegemony Targeted by Google," "Science of Convenience Stores," and "Useful Mathematics." In his spare time, he cheers for the Chunichi Dragons baseball team.
