Julius Caesarの有名な台詞
Julius Caesar was a statesman of the Roman Republic who played a central role in the rise of the Roman Empire. Born into a noble family in 100 BCE, he became a consul in 59 BCE. Around that time, he formed a triumvirate with the general Pompey the Great and the millionaire Marcus Licinius Crassus. Then he invaded Gaul, todayʼs France, and made it a Roman province. Meanwhile, the triumvirate came to an end due to the contention between Caesar and Pompey.
ユリウス・カエサルは共和政ローマの政治家で、ローマ帝国の礎を築いた。紀元前100年に貴族の家に生まれたカエサルは前59年に執政官になった。このころ将軍グナエウス・ポンペイウス・マグヌスおよび大富豪マルクス・リキニウス・クラッススと三頭政治を結成した。その後現在のフランスにあたるガリアに侵攻し、ローマの属州にした。その頃、カエサルとポンペイウスの対立によって三頭政治は破綻していた。
In 49 BCE, when Caesar crossed the Rubicon from Gaul and entered Italy, a civil war broke out between Caesar and Pompey. Caesar defeated Pompey and became a life dictator. But in 44 BCE, he was stabbed to death by senators afraid of his power. In William Shakespeareʼs Julius Caesar, Caesar exclaims the famous phrase, “Et tu, Brute? (And you, Brutus?),” on spotting his friend Brutus among the assassins. Caesarʼs adopted son Octavius became the first emperor of the Roman Empire. Caesarʼs legacy includes the Julian calendar, a solar calendar which he introduced in place of the formerly used lunar calendar.
前49年、カエサルがガリアからルビコン川を渡ってイタリアに侵入し、カエサルとポンペイウスの間で内乱が勃発、カエサルはポンペイウスを破り終身独裁官となる。しかし前44年、カエサルの権力を恐れる元老院議員たちによって刺殺された。ウィリアム・シェイクスピアの『ジュリアス・シーザー』で暗殺者の中に友人のブルートゥスを見つけたカエサルが叫ぶ「お前もか、ブルータス」の台詞は有名である。カエサルの養子オクタウィウスはローマ帝国初代皇帝となった。後世に残るカエサルの遺産には、従来の太陰暦に代えて制定した太陽暦ユリウス暦がある。
