人為的地球温暖化に何らかの立場を示す論文に限ると、97.1％が合意を支持し、著者（回答者1189名）の自己評価でも、97.2％の論文が合意を支持した（注4）。
しかし、これで決着がつくかと言うと、話はそう単純でもない。というのも、否定論とされる側は、この見解自体に疑念を投げかけるからだ。
経済学者リチャード・トルは、クックらの計算方法を批判している。トル自身は合意の存在を否定しているわけではないが、気候変動否定論者やそこに近い人物はしばしば、これをもって合意の存在自体を疑問視する。両者の間ではその後も議論の応酬が続いたが、クックとオレスケスを含むグループは、合意についての複数の研究を再整理した結果、合意が90～100％の範囲にあることを確認した（注5）。
